About Flow Free
Flow Free is a minimalist puzzle game based on connecting pairs of coloured dots. It has no story and almost no decoration, but it provides thousands of small challenges that reward careful thinking. This page explains the rules and offers techniques that help with larger boards.
Rules
Each board contains pairs of dots in different colours. You draw a pipe from one dot to its matching partner. Pipes cannot cross or overlap, and a puzzle is complete only when every pair is connected and the entire board is filled. The final requirement makes the puzzle more interesting, because a solution that links the colours but leaves empty spaces is not enough.
Modes
You can play at your own pace in free play, where levels are grouped into packs of increasing size and difficulty. Time Trial gives you a limited period to solve as many boards as possible. Some versions also include daily puzzles and special modes with different board shapes. The variety allows you to relax or push yourself.
Starting strategy
Begin with the dots in corners or along edges, because their paths are more limited. Connect them with short routes that hug the border, leaving the centre open. Avoid blocking a corner so that another colour has no way to reach it. When a space has only one possible entrance, that path is usually forced and should be completed first.
Logic techniques
Look for squares that can only be filled by a single colour. If an empty cell has only two open neighbours, a pipe must pass through it. When you find yourself with an isolated empty cell, it is a sign that an earlier decision was wrong. Undoing a recent pipe and rerouting is often faster than continuing.
Avoiding frustration
Larger grids can feel overwhelming. Treat them as a series of smaller regions and solve one area at a time. If you have been stuck for a while, step away; a fresh look often reveals an obvious path. Hints, where available, can help but should be used sparingly if you want to improve.
Suitability
The game is suitable for almost anyone, including children who are learning logic and adults who want a brief mental exercise. Because it has no violence or language, it is appropriate for a wide audience. Players who prefer action or narrative may find it too quiet.
Spending and ads
The free version includes advertisements and may limit certain features, while a paid option removes interruptions. No internet connection is required for most play, which makes it a good travelling companion.
A habit that helps
Many people get stuck on Flow Free because they connect colours in the order they see them. A better habit is to ask which colour has the fewest possible paths and solve that one first. Another useful habit is to count empty squares before you start a large board. If the total number of squares seems too small for the pipes you are planning, one of your routes is probably too long.
Final thoughts
Flow Free is clear, elegant and satisfying. It rewards observation more than speed and offers enough levels to last a long time. If you enjoy neat logical puzzles, it is an easy recommendation.
